i) Annual Continuing Orthopaedic Instructional Courses.
This course starts from the third Thursday of every September and is held in different parts of the country each year. Special care is taken to see that the course is organised so as to cover all the regions of the country – North, South, East, West and Central. This is an intensive four days instructional course and differs from programmes organised by National & Regional Associations. It also differs from skill workshops where the emphasis is very often on craft training and is for intensive presentation of a craft used in the field of orthopaedics.
The programme of this organisation is of a thematics nature. The trustees plan details of the subjects for the counsel at a particular course many years ahead of the scheduled date so that the faculty can prepare themselves to give their best during the course. An example will illustrate this point. The venue of future courses, themes and local convenors have already been finalised for the next 5 years.
ii) O.T: Technician Course
The foundation realises the importance of tam work in the field of orthopaedic practice. Orthopaedics is no longer a “aole performance” by an orthopaedics surgeon. The qulity of work can not be improved without supporting service. This equires a qualified and dedicated team. Every member of the team plays an important part.
The foundation has therefore started O.T Technicians course in different parts of the country in local languages of the area so that the technicians, whose knowledge of english may not be of high order, will find it convenient to absord the reqirements of working in an operation theatre and supporting the orthopaedic surgeon in the performance of his work. On national basis, the foundation has decided to hold annual O.T Technician course in 4 basic languages of the country i.e English, Hindi, Tamil & Bengali and have also identified the centre where these annuak courses can be most effectively conducted. Manuals are to be published in thses four languages, with revision and upgradation at appropriate intervals so that the O.T technicians are also kept upto date with the changing requirements of the orthopaedic practitioners.
For present, the course is being held in many other languages e.g, Gujarati, Oriya, Marathi etc. to popularise the course all over the country. For the future the OT manual will be published in only four languages as mentioned above. Any orthopaedic surgeon who wants to train their local O.T Technicians in their local languages can use the manual which provides all the information needed to conduct the course. The manual can be translated to its local language.
iii) PG. Instructional Course
Experience has shown that there is a very high failure rate in the examinations held by the National Board. The Foundation pondered ever the matter and came to the conclusion that it may be worthwhile to hold annual crash courses for training post-graduae students on how to prepare and face the examination. More than ten courses have been held for candidates registered for the National Board Examination. The response from the post graduate students has been very favourable. The faculty for such courses will be drawn from senior teachers of all medical colleges of that area who really constitute the core of examiners for such examinations. The foundation places the responsibilty on the examiners to ensure that the prospective candidates are given detailed understanding of what is needed to enable them to overcome the hurdle of the National Board Examination and to eventually emerge as winners. The foundation has started producing manuals which can act as reference materials for such courses which the students can use as reference material.
iv) Eminent Orthopaedic Surgeon Award
Foundation realised that many orthopaedics surgeons struggled hard to establish this speciality in India. Many brought laurels to the country. Such orthopaedic surgeon of eminence need to be recognised and felicitated during the annual course of the foundation.
